The Stuttgart State Opera is one of the most important European opera houses and is also part of the largest multi-genre theater in Europe.

The Württemberg State Theaters consist of the Stuttgart State Opera, the Stuttgart Ballet and the Stuttgart Theater and have been successfully managed since 1994 in a management model that is unique in Germany: all three divisions work artistically and economically autonomously under the direction of their respective directors - Viktor Schoner for the State Opera, Tamas Detrich for the Stuttgart Ballet and Burkhard C. Kosminski for the Stuttgart Theater - while the general management of the joint operation is in the hands of the managing director Marc-Oliver Hendriks.

The Stuttgart State Operacontinues to provide important impetus for contemporary music theater and is considered to be one of the leading theaters in the world. The ensemble theater is deliberately cultivated in this house. The State Opera alone counts a total of around 320,000 visitors in the season, of which around 32,000 form a permanent subscriber base. The opera house has 1404 seats.

Since the 2018/19 season, another venue has been the Nord, which, with JOiN , is home to the young section of the State Opera. JOiN sees itself as a meeting place and place of action for all ages and arts. In the Liederhalle, the Staatsorchester Stuttgart performs seven symphony and seven chamber concerts per season, often with high-ranking soloists and guests.

In total, the Stuttgart State Opera was voted “Opera House of the Year” six times in the critics’ survey conducted by Opernwelt magazine . The Staatsopernchor Stuttgart is one of the best choirs in European music theater and has already been awarded the title "Opera Choir of the Year" thirteen times . This makes him the undisputed leader in the 22-year history of the survey. The Stuttgart State Orchestra has also been voted “Orchestra of the Year” .
