Egmont (arr. Alain Craens) Beethoven

In 1568, Count of Egmont was beheaded on the Grand Place of Brussels. The foundations of the Low Countries shook under the guillotines and repressive rule of Philip II. The execution of the beloved Egmont sparked great discontent among the people and marked the beginning of the bloody Eighty Years' War.

Two centuries later, Goethe and Beethoven paid homage to the rebellious count. In the historical music theater production "Egmont," Het Banket, I SOLISTI, and Vlaams Radiokoor explore how Egmont became a symbol of reason and tolerance and what his example still has to say to us.

Through the captivating text and music of this new 'Egmont,' the performance presents an intriguing and unbiased account of the historical facts, with nods to the works of Goethe and Beethoven, all from a contemporary perspective. The spotlight on history in 'Egmont' also casts a critical examination of our own time, just as Beethoven and Goethe did over 200 years ago in their tumultuous era.

Since his death, Egmont symbolizes moderation and tolerance in turbulent and polarizing times. His life story has inspired many subsequent generations and continues to resonate today.

In 1568 werd Graaf van Egmont onthoofd op de Grote Markt van Brussel. De grondvesten van de Lage Landen daverden onder het koppenrollende en repressieve bewind van Filips II. De terechtstelling van de populaire Egmont maakte grote onvrede los bij de bevolking en luidde de bloedige Tachtigjarige Oorlog in.

Twee eeuwen later eerden Goethe en Beethoven de opstandige graaf. In het historische muziektheater Egmont, onderzoeken Het Banket, I SOLISTI en Vlaams Radiokoor hoe Egmont uitgroeide tot een symbool van redelijkheid en tolerantie en wat zijn voorbeeld ons nog te zeggen heeft. 

Tekst en muziek vertellen in deze nieuwe ‘Egmont’ een boeiend en onpartijdig relaas van de historische feiten, knipogend naar het werk van Goethe en Beethoven en vanuit een hedendaags bewustzijn. Met felle spots op de geschiedenis werpt ‘Egmont’ immers ook een kritisch licht op onze eigen tijd – net zoals Beethoven en Goethe dat meer dan 200 jaar geleden deden vanuit de woelige tijd waarin zij leefden. 

Sinds zijn dood symboliseert Egmont gematigdheid en tolerantie in woelige en polariserende tijden. Zijn levensverhaal inspireerde vele volgende generaties en zindert ook vandaag nog door.
