Among the operas that forever won Russian hearts back in the 19th century, a special place is occupied by Charles Gounod 's Faust based on the tragedy by I.V. Goethe. Almost immediately, the opera gained popularity in Russia: the Bolshoi Theater staged the first edition in 1866, only 7 years after the premiere in Paris.

Without exaggeration, Faust is part of Russian and Moscow opera culture . Among the enthusiastic admirers of the work was a young doctor, and then a famous writer and playwright - Mikhail Bulgakov (1891-1940 ).
Gounod's opera is a "cross-cutting character" of his work; she is mentioned, among other things, in the novel The Master and Margarita.

Novaya Opera presented the premiere of Faust in the year of the 150th anniversary of the first Moscow performance and the 125th anniversary of the birth of Mikhail Bulgakov.
In the work of director Ekaterina Odegova and playwright, recognized expert and opera historian Mikhail Muginstein, the characters of Goethe and Gounod acquire recognizable Moscow features.
