De ce plaisir coupable est né le personnage de Sweeney Todd, auquel le dramaturge anglais Christopher Bond a inventé en 1970 un passé et des motivations inspirés par certains épisodes du Comte de Monte-Cristo et du Barbier de Séville. Neuf ans plus tard, c’est au tour du génial Stephen Sondheim d’immortaliser la vengeance du barbier de Fleet Street avec une partition à la fois épique et fantasque. Après le succès de West Side Story en 2022, le truculent Barrie Kosky retrouve Sondheim et les scènes de l’Opéra national du Rhin avec ce palpitant et hilarant thriller musical, mené par Scott Hendricks et Natalie Dessay sous la direction de Bassem Akiki.

In the 19th century , Great Britain became passionate about penny dreadfuls, these macabre stories inspired by real events published in serial form. From this guilty pleasure was born the character of Sweeney Todd, to whom the English playwright Christopher Bond invented in 1970 a past and motivations inspired by certain episodes of The Count of Monte Cristo and The Barber of Seville. Nine years later, it is the turn of the brilliant Stephen Sondheim to immortalize the vengeance of the barber of Fleet Street with a score that is both epic and fanciful. After the success of West Side Story in 2022, the truculent Barrie Kosky returns to Sondheim and the stages of the Opéra national du Rhin with this thrilling and hilarious musical thriller, led by Scott Hendricks and Natalie Dessay under the direction of Bassem Akiki.
