Leoš Janáček's late work »The Makropulos Affair« is a Kafkaesque metaphor, meta-opera and a parable about the value of life and the longing for immortality. At the beginning of the 17th century, Emilia Marty consumed an elixir that extended life by 300 years. Apparently, however, long life does not bring happiness: After this time has passed, she has only contempt for life and the living. Still, she doesn't want to die. As the effects begin to wear off, she tries by all means to get hold of the formula.

With Janáček's last two operas »The Makropulos Affair« and »From the House of the Dead«the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden is bringing an unprecedented double project to the stage in a production by Nicolas Brieger and under the musical direction of Johannes Klumpp. »Experiencing these two intertwined is an exciting journey beneath the epidermis of human existence.« (Nicolas Brieger)

Leoš Janáčeks Spätwerk »Die Sache Makropulos« ist kafkaeske Metapher, Meta-Oper und eine Parabel über den Wert des Lebens und die Sehnsucht nach Unsterblichkeit. Emilia Marty nahm zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts ein Elixier zu sich, dass das Leben um 300 Jahre verlängert. Glücklich macht das lange Leben aber anscheinend nicht: Nach Ablauf dieser Zeit hat sie für das Leben und die Lebenden nur noch Verachtung übrig. Sterben will sie trotzdem nicht. Als die Wirkung nachzulassen beginnt, versucht sie mit allen Mitteln an die Formel zu gelangen.

Mit Janáčeks letzten beiden Opern »Die Sache Makropulos« und »Aus einem Totenhaus« bringt das Hessische Staatstheater Wiesbaden in der Inszenierung von Nicolas Brieger und unter der Musikalischen Leitung von Johannes Klumpp ein noch nie dagewesenes Doppelprojekt auf die Bühne. »Diese beiden miteinander verwoben zu erleben, ist eine aufregende Reise unter die Epidermis menschlicher Existenz.« (Nicolas Brieger)
