The G. Verdi's Don Charles premiere of took place in 1867. In Paris, the opera is based on a play by Friedrich Schiller. In this Schiller drama lay what Verdi was looking for in his late operas - leaving the theatrical external dramas and librettos full of romantic passions, the composer turned to inner tragedy; the external action in these works is small, but they seek to express inner experiences, the search for truth, and a longing for humanity.

As a genius music playwright, Verdi was well aware that Schiller’s political drama provides far fewer opportunities to convey viewers ’favorite passions and collisions of feelings than the family relationship drama. So the two were combined into one perfect drama of personal, political and ideological conflicts. After finishing the score for the Paris Opera, Verdi was only 53 years old, but he spent another 20 years editing, shortening, removing arias or scenes from here, and returning them here again… No other opera had so many editions. " Don Carlo's score makes it very clear where Verdi bowed to the Paris Opera Convention and where he was the master of his work. Naturally, the question arises as to how this opera would have sounded if it had not been subject to any restrictions. We decided to find out with Günter. We tried to electrify the course of the opera, to give even more tension to the dramatic material of the work. We performed some musical notes to enhance the impact of the music, and swapped some scenes for a more cohesive flow of events.
