Richard Wagner began work on the libretto for »Lohengrin« in the summer of 1845. For the story of the Duke's daughter Elsa and the Knight of the Grail Lohengrin, he was inspired by both historical events and mythological tales. When Wagner's future father-in-law, Franz Liszt, conducted the premiere of »Lohengrin« in Weimar in August 1850, Wagner was in exile in Switzerland because he was wanted on a warrant for his participation in the Dresden barricade fight. The confrontation with the character of Elsa, who is supposed to stand for a better future, made him a revolutionary, wrote Wagner. With »Lohengrin« he has created a new form of opera: the through-composed music drama.

Richard Wagner begann im Sommer 1845 mit der Arbeit am Libretto zu »Lohengrin«. Zur Geschichte um die Herzogstochter Elsa und den Gralsritter Lohengrin ließ er sich sowohl von historischen Ereignissen als auch von mythologischen Erzählungen inspirieren. Als im August 1850 Wagners späterer Schwiegervater Franz Liszt die Uraufführung des »Lohengrin« in Weimar leitete, befand sich Wagner im Schweizer Exil, da er wegen seiner Beteiligung am Dresdner Barrikadenkampf steckbrieflich gesucht wurde. Die Auseinandersetzung mit der Figur der Elsa, die für eine bessere Zukunft stehen soll, habe ihn zum Revolutionär gemacht, schrieb Wagner. Mit »Lohengrin« hat er eine neue Opernform geschaffen: das durchkomponierte Musikdrama.
